Dwyer's Pub owner Kevin Dwyer said his business needs to make the the most of every opportunity it can get, which means Dwyer's Pub will stay open this winter despite the risks of COVID-19.

PORTSMOUTH — Upon opening in December 2019, Kevin Dwyer, owner of Dwyer’s Pub on Bridge Street, had not been anticipating a worldwide pandemic to cripple the ability of “mom-and-pop” business owners to make a living and safely serve their patrons.

Heading toward the one-year anniversary of COVID-19’s widely unexpected landfall and upending of typical sit-in dining, Dwyer is observing many of his fellow Portsmouth restaurateurs and entrepreneurs shuttering their doors for a winter hiatus.

His own business, however, will fight on through the season, unsure of what the immediate future holds for Dwyer’s Pub and other local food and drink establishments battling lower patronage due to the coronavirus.

“We need to be making the most out of every opportunity in every season that we can. Now it’s just time to try to do what we can to survive winter,” he said.

Dwyer's Pub at 96 Bridge St. in Portsmouth will remain open this winter despite the risks of COVID-19.

In recent weeks, many eateries in Portsmouth, known beyond New Hampshire as a restaurant destination city, have announced “hibernations” for the winter to mitigate the risks of COVID-19 and because of simply not having enough customers during this tough time to make the finances work. They include Cava Tapas and Wine Bar, Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Cafe, The Franklin, Moxy, Row 34, Rudi’s Portsmouth, Cisco Brewers, Poco’s Bow Street Cantina, and Martingale Wharf, as well as many others around the Seacoast.

Amid the flurry of closing announcements, Dwyer took to social media to state his business’ intention to remain open and ready to serve.
